Things to do while staying at Sunset Cottage

We are located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.  It is a rural area with dairy farms and organic farms with views of the Green Mountains, open fields and wooded lands.  Many people come here just to relax and get away from city life.  We have had people come and stay who are writing a book or finishing up a thesis and find the setting ideal.   People use the cottage as a base for day trips to Canada, Burlington, the state capital Montpelier, or to go Skiing, Hiking, Boating, Fishing, Hunting, Tennis, Golf, depending on the season.

Craftsbury and Craftsbury Common are home to Sterling College and the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.  Sterling is the smallest 4 year college in the state.  There are three libraries in the Craftsbury area.  The Common is one of the most photographed sites of a typical New England village with it’s white houses, Craftsbury Academy, the United Church of Craftsbury and the Craftbury Historical Society.

In the winter there is excellent cross country skiing at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center and nearby Highland Lodge.  Meals are available at both places.  There are over 100 kilometers of groomed trails and both have equipment rentals.  There is also snow shoeing and an ice skating pond at the Outdoor Center.  The cottage is located by the VATS trail if you are a snowmobiler.  Park your trailer at the cottage and go from there.  We are within an hour of major downhill/snowboard ski areas including Jay Peak, Stowe, Smuggler’s Notch and Burke Mountain.

In summer the Outdoor Center facilitates biking, with rentals and world class sculling on the finger lakes.  There are many nearby lakes and ponds which provide fishing, boating and swimming.  There are several nearby golf courses, including the championship course at Jay Peak.  There is all levels of hiking from the Long Trail to Just walking in the surrounding area.
